What is a digital story?

First, let’s look at the term digital. It means that information is encoded in binary form, ones and zeros – the language of computers. So, digital means that the story is created on a computer and all story elements are fed into the computer.

Story elements? A digital story is an audio-visual piece of art, using images (still photos and graphics, possibly videos) and sound – music, sound effects and, the most essential element of all, a narrating voice, your voice.

It is a short movie that is created on the computer and then burned onto a DVD. It can be shown on a TV, a computer or on the internet.

If it is a movie, why call it a digital story?
Good point; the most important, in fact. A digital story is personal. That means it is written and narrated by YOU, telling the story from your own, personal perspective. This is what makes it so powerful. You, the storyteller, sharing something that touched your heart; and by sharing it,  touching the hearts of many others.

The subject of the story can be anything. What matters is this: What does the storyteller think and feel? What is it that has moved you so much that you want to tell this story?
It can be a memory or a dream. A challenge, a victory, an insight, a lesson. Something tragic, funny, or uplifting. A life-changing event, a journey, a vision of the future, a brief moment in life.

Anything that can be told in a few minutes. Yes, a digital story is short. Shortness is crucial. We are all flooded with information. To get your message across, keep in mind: Less is more.
